Arts

From handmade woodcrafts to colorful ceramics, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) offers a wide range of unique art forms to any culturally-minded visitor. These artistic styles all utilize techniques distinctive to the DPRK culture and have evolved from their rich history of traditionally used practices. In order to safeguard these techniques, the DPRK government focuses on the education and institutionalization of the DPRK culture. The Mansudae Art Studio with its 4000 staff members of which 1000 artists, is a clear example of this practice, being the largest state-run art studio in the world. It contains thirteen creative departments, all of which are focused on the creation and reproduction of specific artistic styles. Within these groups the artists are free to explore their artistic talents in the light of DPRK-centered themes. These themes include the Kim family, DPRK everyday life and the revolutionary past; all often epically portrayed in large decorative paintings. This falls in line with the Socialist Realism art genre the DPRK artists endorse in order to reflect DPRK’s central ideology. Social Realism allows all members of the DPRK society to understand and equally access the art, examining the tempestuous landscapes without knowing the artist’s explanation behind the work. In this line of thought, the art works often address themes that are explicit and realistically portrayed, containing symbols that can be perceived in everyday life. This allows the DPRK society to feel connected with the artists, uniting a nation of diverse backgrounds.
The most iconic and unique art form
employed in the DPRK is the Chosonhwa
technique. This practice involves ink and brush strokes on thin rice paper
known as “hanji”. The high delicacy that is needed to engage in this practice requires
the artists to superbly master its fine craftsmanship. The medium truly
flourished in the 1950s where influences of Socialist Realism allowed the art
form to become unique to the DPRK. This makes DPRK artists renowned for their
skills, developing this ever-evolving technique.
The Mansudae Art Studio Gallery located in
the capital Pyongyang, is a definite must-see for any art-lover or DPRK-involved
individual. It allows visitors to witness the work methods of DPRK artists and
their talent of mastering composition, light and depth in a single frame. The
visit enlightens any visitor of the rich and creative talent the artists have,
as they exhibit their oil paintings, calligraphy and woodcrafts. All works are handmade,
of fine quality and are uniquely developed, making the art works one of a kind.
In the tours you are provided the opportunity to examine the artists’ work, buy
some pieces if you wish and through workshops experience the delicacy of the gestures
needed in order to create such an art piece.
For all viewers, DPRK art is fascinating, as
it provides a deeper insight to the artistic creation of a nation that is
united by art. The unique techniques used suggest the technological mastery and
fine craftsmanship of the DPRK artists. One can only admire their skills that soars
the nation to new artistic heights.
